Therapy Thoughts - Signs it’s Time to Explore Therapy

Maybe your best friend loves her therapist and can’t stop raving about therapy and what she’s discovering.  Maybe you’re feeling flat, or blue and would like some help exploring that.  Maybe you’re feeling great, but know there are big changes coming up soon and you’d like to prepare for them.  Maybe you’re a curious explorer of your life and you’d like some company and another perspective.  Deciding to begin therapy is a personal decision, where you’re considering things like economic and time investment, what kind of therapist might work for you, and whether now feels like the right time. As a therapist, it’d be in my best interests to say “any time is the best time”, but although there is truth in that, the reality is, it does take energy and commitment on your part - answers and insight can take a while, and there will almost certainly be frustration, stagnation, and sessions where it can feel a bit pointless.  But it’s equally true that therapy can be beneficial for anyone, and it’s never too early or too late to start.  So how do you know when it’s the right time for you?  

Firstly, trust your instincts - something has brought you to be considering therapy. If you've been grappling with persistent emotions like sadness, anxiety, anger, or feeling overwhelmed, therapy can offer a safe space to explore and understand these feelings. Don't underestimate the power of your emotions and their impact on your overall well-being. Remember, therapy is not just for individuals facing crisis situations; it's for anyone seeking personal development and emotional well-being.

Life is full of ups and downs, and major life events or transitions can take a toll on our mental health. Whether you're experiencing a loss, going through a breakup, facing work-related stress, or dealing with a significant life change, therapy can provide the support and guidance needed to navigate these challenges. A therapist can help you develop coping mechanisms, explore new perspectives, and regain a sense of balance in your life.

Even if you have a strong support system of friends and family, there are times when their understanding and guidance may fall short, or you may have a nagging sense that maybe you’re overwhelming them with your issues. Therapy offers a unique opportunity to work with a trained professional who can provide objective insights, unbiased perspectives, and tools tailored to your specific needs. It's a space where you can freely express your thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment.

It can also help you step forward into whatever is next for you, by providing a space and time where it’s ok to dream, and speak those dreams out loud.  

On a practical level, it’s normal to feel nervous as you make the decision, and it’s accepted to speak to a few therapists before beginning.  You’ll usually know in 6 sessions whether the therapist is a good fit for you, and if they aren’t, it’s ok to stop and look for someone else, at which point, you’ll probably have a better idea of what does and doesn’t seem to work for you.  

Remember, therapy is a journey, and the decision to start can be a really helpful step in your commitment to living a fulfilling life.
